Gibson Halloween Store Display (1920's) The story on this piece is that it was found in the basement of an old bookstore operating from the 1920s to around the 40's. Notice the contraction on Hallow'een... This looks to be a remnant of something more; the right end of the fence is tab-like (I placed the weight there to hold the front fence section in place at a curve). As it is, the piece is almost 17" long (with fence folded in front) and about 8" high. I'm guessing it to be rare (?) since it is fragile and made for merchant display. There is a rustling of feathers and flapping of wings-the Labradors are immediately on alert. As the men finish baling, they watch the geese flying high above them. It will soon be time for them to head south. The humid air is heavy with the smell of freshly cut hay. The crew keeps a watchful eye on the growing thunderhead. They know the storm will soon roll in. Limited to 14 firing days. 8-1/4" dia. (14) Rooster on a Plate I'm not sure how I feel about this painting. I had a hard time finishing it. It's got a much more folk art feeling than most of my other work. A friend asked me to paint some chickens for her kitchen. This was supposed to be a white chicken but it turned into a rooster somehow. I do like painting on these wood plates. I'm going to get more of them. I think it would look good to have a group of them hanging in the kitchen. It's acrylic on a wooden decorative plate. Beyer and Bock Handpainted Plate I just love the colors on this Beyer & Bock plate. Bottom mark dates it 1905-1920. Svenska Mobler (Swedish Furniture) Impossible to find and certainly charming hardback book of Swedish and Scandinavian furniture before 1948!! All text is Swedish. There is also a year listed, which is helpful for non-Swedish readers as well as owner or provenance of the piece of furniture and I can even figure out a few words myself! Black and white sharp photos on almost every page. (The title of the book is also the name of some high-end US modern furniture stores, but of course it has nothing to do with the book!) Truly an antique collector or furniture lover's must have. Un paralleled reference for identification and historical note! Small hardback, large pocket sized. Pages are coated, matte. (18) Roman Forum and Santa Francesca Romana Santa Francesca Romana, previously known as Santa Maria Nova, is a church in Rome, situated next to the Roman Forum. The church was built in the second half of the 10th century, incorporating an eighth-century oratory that Pope Paul I excavated in the wing of the portico of the Temple of Venus and Roma; it was named Santa Maria Nova ("new St. Mary"), to distinguish it from the other Roman Forum church devoted to St. Mary, Santa Maria Antiqua ("ancient St. Mary"), which had become dilapidated in the 10th century;[1] it was rebuilt by Pope Honorius II in the 13th century, when the campanile was built and the apse was decorated with mosaics of a Maesta, the Madonna enthroned accompanied by saints. The cafe opened just 7 weeks ago, with a demand by the locals who wanted a nice cafe—which is missing in this up-coming area of Hackney. This 'rusty-chic' understated cafe, is tastefully decorated by the owner and interior designer—Susie. Her experience in collecting and selling antique furniture, and mid 20th century design classics, blossoms in this chic and cosy hideaway. Loafing decor is minimalist and simple, and there is lots of wood, and lots of light from two large windows. We were impressed with its variety of freshly baked bread and colorful all-natural pastries delivered from Primrose Hill. We had a tasty sandwich with 'ginger-pork ham and pickles', and with its ham from nearby, aesthetically-pleasing, Ginger Pork Deli. Espresso after the meal is served in a little glass, coming from a cool, top-of-the-line, espresso machine. The only thing we wish Loafing had is 'sparking water', instead of, only tap water — even though it's eco-friendly. At this moment the cafe space is only on the ground floor, but Susie is planning to expand the space to the small back garden and downstairs with a 19 century old bakery oven. Susie also wants her place as a meeting space for the locals, and she's thinking to organize small events such as wine tasting or vintage bags and jewelry sale. Loafing is a perfect place for a cup of tea after a nice walk in Victoria Park. We can't wait to see the completion of the garden and downstair space! I've done ATC's before, but nothing on this large of a scale. I'm Room Mom for my daughter's class and I'm decorating the door for a contest. My first idea bombed today and I came home and did all this after dinner. It's 1:30 a.m. now...argh. It's not original. I used an illustration by Julia Woolf to go by, but I did trace the pieces, cut them out of construction paper, glued them together and colored them with oil pastels and chalk. Mirepoix started life on the other side of the River Hers but following a terrible flood in 1209 which wiped out many of the villages in the area Mirepoix was rebuilt on the opposite bank. Mirepoix suffered during the Hundred Years War but then became an important textile centre in the 15th century. The highlight of this ancient bastide town is the central square - the Place des Couverts - surrounded by medieval houses and arcades (covered walkways in front of the shops). It's name is cited for the first time in the 10th century in a charter granted to the inhabitants by the count of Foix Raymond Roger and is thought to have celtic origins. The 'Maison des Consuls' is one of the best of these buildings. Have a look at the carved figures on the ancient woodwork, these include African heads, women’s heads and a tortoise. There are an incredible 103 carvings in total! Over at the other end of the square sits the tourist office in one of the lovely buildings. Look outside the tourist office for the two grain measures dating from the 17th -18th century. They hold 20 litres of grain each. There is also a wrought iron market hall in the centre of the square, built in the 19th century. Market day in Mirepoix is a Monday. Ye Olde Six Bells This was our local watering-hole in our "youf". The origins of the pub are reputedly 9th century (though I do wonder if there is ANY historical basis for this claim at all), but most of the current building is 15th century. It obviously gets its name from the bells in St Bart's church. Both the church and the pub are on the River Mole, only a mile or two from its source near the runway at Gatwick Airport. A popular place to visit by people staying at the very many airport hotels. For instance, Easter eggs do not owe their origins to Christianity and originally the festival of Easter itself and the giving of Easter gifts had nothing to do with Christianity either. A closer look at the history of both Easter and the Easter egg reveals a much earlier association with pagan ritual and in particular, the pagan rites of spring, dating back into pre history. For us, the ancient rites celebrating the Spring Equinox are most obviously associated with the mysterious Druids and places like Stone Henge, but most ancient races around the world had similar spring festivals to celebrate the rebirth of the year. The Egg, as a symbol of fertility and re-birth, has been associated with these rites from the earliest times. The Christian Festival of Easter In fact, the festival of Easter is a classic example of the early Christian church adapting an existing pagan ritual to suit their own purposes. The Saxon spring festival of Eostre, was named for their goddess of dawn, and when they came to Britain in about the 5th century AD, the festival came with them along with re-birth and fertility rituals involving eggs, chicks and rabbits. When the Saxons converted to Christianity and started to celebrate the death and the resurrection of Christ, it coincided with Eostre, so that's what the early church in Britain called the celebration, Eostre or Easter in modern English. The actual date that Easter falls on every year is governed by a fairly complex calculation related to the Spring Equinox. The actual formula is: The first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox is Easter Sunday or Easter Day. This formula was set by Egyptian astronomers in Alexandra in 235ad, and calculated using the same method as the Jews have traditionally used to calculate the feast of the Passover, which occurred at about the same time as the crucifixion. Early Easter Eggs As well as adopting the festival of Eostre, the Egg, representing fertility and re-birth in pagan times, was also adopted as part of the Christian Easter festival and it came to represent the 'resurrection' or re-birth of Christ after the crucifixion and some believe it is a symbol of the stone blocking the Sepulchre being 'rolled' away. In the UK and Europe, the earliest Easter eggs were painted and decorated hen, duck or goose eggs, a practice still carried on in parts of the world today. As time went by, artificial eggs were made and by the end of the 17th century, manufactured eggs made of various materials were available for purchase at Easter, for giving as Easter gifts and presents. Easter eggs continued to evolve through the 18th and into the 19th Century, with hollow cardboard eggs filled with Easter gifts and sumptuously decorated, culminating with the fabulous Faberge Eggs. Encrusted with jewels, they were made for the Czar's of Russia by Carl Faberge, a French jeweller. Surely these were the 'ultimate' Easter gift, to buy even a small one now would make you poorer by several millions of pounds sterling. The Chocolate Easter Egg It was at about this time (early 1800's) that the first chocolate Easter egg appeared in Germany (who also invented the advent calendar) and France and soon spread to the rest of Europe and beyond. The first chocolate eggs were solid soon followed by hollow eggs. Alth The Eostara Basket Project: Cutting the Opening Since one side turned out a little too soft, that is the side that I cut out to make the opening. You can see the lopsided results here. I started by cutting a small opening and then used that as a guide to cut out the larger opening. I stuck the stuffed animals inside to give some idea of the size. I have not yet been able to locate the seed that I'm supposed to use for growing the grass. The instructions that I found on the internet call for "winter rye" seed; since I don't know the first thing about plants or gardening, if I can't find the seed today, I'll just move on to Plan B for the grass. Actually, I'm kind of leaning toward Plan B anyway because I don't want to mess up my basket with my lack of gardening skills (I have a black thumb). Even though my basket looks rather crude at this point, I'm still a little proud of it. As my mother keeps reminding me, this is my first attempt at making one. We'll see. At any rate, I now need to figure out how I want to decorate/conceal the raw cut edge. I definitely want to do something with flowers... I also bought a mask and some things to decorate it with which I will do tonight or tomorrow...I'm so excited! :D I got several picture frames, five 2 yard chunks of fabric (one of which is featured in today's picture...it's actually baby blue but the lighting was dark today thanks to a snow storm), fake flowers, a feather neck thing (I dunno what they're called), ect. I wanted to feature wings in today's picture as a sign of growth and transition. That's my theme for the year: growth. Themed Kitchen Decorations
A group of friends and I went to visit Matt's new home a few weeks ago. It's in Sacramento and a few miles away from where I actually live. When I had heard the news, I was surprised. In October, Matt had talked to me about it. But I had forgotten about it. I don't think most people my age would have buying a brand new home on their mind. Me and you are here talking about buying new shoes, but Matt is buying a new house, Jimmy said. I felt a bit empty after weighting the proportions of those thoughts. Since his home was still being built, Matt led us into the model of his home first. It was a spacious single story home. When you open the front door, there's a clear view all the way into the backyard. Matt and I were the first go in since we arrive earlier than everyone else. He walked straight to the refrigerator and grabbed a water bottle from the rack. He was at home. We talked about things like interest rates, mortgage plans and things like that. I asked him if had plans for the backyard yet and he told me no. The backyard would be the last thing. We talk about furniture. The house is going to feel very empty in the beginning, he said. We were in awe of everything: the design and layout of the fake furniture, the paint on the walls, the large marble counter in the kitchen, the themed bedrooms, and comfort of it all. Everyone was feeling slightly envious. We walked over the other model homes next door. There were 3 of them, mostly large two story homes with fancy staircases and interiors. There was even one home that had a small hidden room, large enough for small children to sleep in, inside the guest closet. Another family who were also walking through the home, called it a "time-out box". As big and grand as they were, these homes did not impress us as much as the first one. We nit-picked and point out all the faults, from the wooden beams in the ceiling to the hotel lobby feeling of the living rooms. After we were done with the model rooms, we walked down the street and around the corner. Here, you could see the new homes being built. Matt's house was halfway down the block. The frame and walls had been built up though there was the driveway and interior of the house still waiting to be finished. Matt would close by the end of February. If things go according to he and Tina would be able to move in sometime around then too. The unfinished house felt much different than the model. Though they had the same floor plan and size, the unfinished home felt much smaller, the ceiling much lower. There were holes all along the walls for where the various outlets would be placed. When we walked by outside, we noticed that some families had already moved in. There cars on the driveway and lawn decorations up. It reminded me of when my neighborhood when my mom and dad had bought our house. I asked Jimmy if he wanted a new house too. Thirty years is a long time and a big commitment, he said. Yeah it is, I said. We walked back down to where our cars were parked in front of the main office of the lot and meet up for lunch at one of the new suburban restaurants. At the beginning of the day, I had wanted to be where Matt was. It wasn't so much the house itself; it was the thought of just being able to buy a house. I felt so far away as I pulled away from the sidewalk. Its a Cat Christmas As promised, here is a picture of the 6 ft Christmas tree in our kitchen - this tree contains only cat ornaments, green/gold/red garland & a few green, gold & red Christmas balls. Best viewed LARGE to see ornaments During Christmas my kitchen is themed as "A Cat Christmas" and all decorations are related to that theme. *Below is the other side of the tree. Sorry these shots arent that great, but I took them in daytime so you would be able to see the ornaments. I started out with a 4 ft tree and each year have had to upgrade! LOL!!!
